To mention but a few…
Our president for 1999/2000 was John Edgington. John’s Presidential Address “The Birmingham West Suburban Railway” has been published by the Society.
Stephen Summerson was a renowned authority on Midland Railway locomotives, authoring a series of books on the subject that are considered definitive works today. His substantial collection of papers, photographs reference material are held by the Midland Railway Study Centre.
Dr John Gough was our president for 1997/1998. John’s presidential address on Records and the Midland Railway has been published by the Society for the benefit of members and his Railways That Never Were can be purchased from our Shop.
Chris Rouse specialised in Midland Railway staff, particularly senior officers and Directors of the Company. He was also a talented modeller responsible for an impressive 00 gauge representation of Rowsley and Bakewell.
Peter Witts served as the Society’s Information Officer for many years assisting countless members and others with their enquiries and research into a broad range of topics. His own specialty was the Midland Railway in the Great War.
Laurence Knighton, together with his close friend Glynn Waite (who never got to serve as Present but was as influential to the Society as any other individual in its history), were ex-railwaymen with a shared passion for the Midland Railway, particularly in Derbyshire and the Peak District. Laurence’s work on Hassop is published by the Society.
The President of the Midland Railway Society for 2025/26 is John Tuckett. In addition to having served as a Trustee for the Roy F Burrows Midland Collection Trust prior to its merger with the MRSoc in 2916, John is a exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable modeller who works in the larger scales.
Chairman Adrian Tester, in announcing the nomination at the 2026 AGM, reminded those present that John was awarded the Chairman’s Cup for his Gauge 1 diorama Lest We Forget 1914-1918 based on the concourse of Bradford Station and portraying soldiers returning from the front by ambulance train.
