The Midland Railway Society are delighted to have been commissioned by East Midlands Railway to author and illustrate a series of interpretation panels outlining the history of Derby Station. Covering subjects from Derby’s first station master, George Henry Rickman and his sad demise, architects Thompson, Trubshaw et al., micro-manager William Towle over at the Midland Hotel, as well as sections on signalling and tickets, to the impact of wartime, we hope we have covered a broad spectrum of interest.

Part of EMR’s contribution to Railway200, the panels have now been installed – just in time for the influx of thousands of visitors to The Greatest Gathering. They are located in the subway lining Platforms 1 to 5, which it is undeniable is not the most heavily trafficked part of the station. Equally, we acknowledge there was no other practical location for them. On a positive note, we can hope that the provision of these panels, and the fresh lick of paint that has been applied to go along with them, make using the subway slightly more enjoyable for passengers!

If you are passing through Derby Station and are not rushing for your train, please consider diverting via the subway and going and having a look. Just don’t linger too long and miss your train.
