There are countless Midland Railway employees resting in eternity in Derby’s Nottingham Road Cemetery (to the Victorians, known as “The New Cemetery”). We have even done a video based on the subject and still hope to produce Volume II at some point.
So when the Friends of Nottingham Road Cemetery asked us if we would support their event on Saturday 10th May 2025 with a small presence, we could hardly refuse. The primary objective for us will be to talk about the MR employees buried there, railway ancestors in general, and really anything relevant to the subject of genealogy.
Come and see us at Derby’s Nottingham Road cemetery chapel during the day if you are interested in any of these. Free car parking and the cemetery is well served by both Arriva and TrentBarton buses.

My coal affords its flame no more, my days of usefulness are o’er,
My wheels deny their noted speed, no more my guiding hand they need,
My whistle too has lost its tone, its shrill and thrilling sounds are gone,
My valves are all thrown open wide, my flanges now refuse to guide,
My clacks also once so strong, refuse to aid the busy throng,
No more I feel each urging breath, my steam is now condensed in death,
Life’s railway over each station passed, in death I’m stopped and rest at last,
Farewell dear friends and cease to weep, In Christ I’m safe, in Him I sleep.
