We are deeply saddened to share news of the death of Ian Howard, a founder and exceptionally distinguished member of the Midland Railway Society.
Over many years, Ian has served the Society in a variety of roles. He has been our President, Deputy Chairman, Trustee and was the a longstanding Editor of our Journal. Even in the days before his death he was actively cataloguing the Jack Braithwaite photograph collection as well as putting the finishing touches on what will, we are sure, be the definitive work on the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway. It is so sad he was unable to see it in print.
Through his long battle with ill-health it was a mark of his indomitable character that he refused to allow any of it to diminish his drive and determination in life and everything he did.
His stated wish is for a low-key cremation with only his immediate family in attendance. There will, however, be a celebration of his life in due course, which friends and acquaintances will be invited to.
