New book: “The Sheffield and Rotherham Railway” by Ian Howard

The Sheffield & Rotherham Railway was promoted in 1836 by the iron masters of Sheffield as they wished to eliminate dependence on unreliable canal navigations. The opening of the railway enabled new works to be established alongside the  railway in the Don valley, away from the confines of the town centre of Sheffield.

The opening of the North Midland Railway in 1840 created new opportunities. By 1860 Sheffield was producing 90% of the world’s steel. Although the original termini no longer exist, the line itself is still extremely busy with cross country expresses and local services.

Ian Howard has produced a comprehensive history of this short line including its later life under the Midland Railway. The book contains many original photographs and extensive appendices.
