New Year Update for Members

The covers of the latest issues of the Midland Railway Society Jounal, the Members's Newsletter and Modelling the Midland

A very Happy New Year to all our Members – whether current, or those who we hope will be joining us in 2026.

The New Year also presents an opportune moment for a few housekeeping notes…

All Members should have received their bumper mailing, with the three publications seen here, some time before Christmas. We have had a few reports of damaged envelopes as a result of them being so well filled. If yours arrived in a “sub-optimal state”, then please let us know. Understanding the scale of the problem will help us address the matter with our printers.

Of course, as well as the “goodies”, the mailing also included the Subscription Renewal, with its bad news of the unavoidable increase. The Executive Committee repeat that we are very sorry we have had to do so, but having managed to avoid it for TEN YEARS, the incremental effect of inflation has left us with no choice.

If you forgot to update your Standing Order to £30 before 1st January, you are not alone! The Membership Secretary or the Treasurer will delighted to receive a one-off “top up” of £10 to save them having to gently remind you. An updated version of the form can be downloaded from the Members’ Area (log in details can be found inside the back cover of the Newsletter). Of course if you have never got round to setting up a Standing Order or recurring payment on your online banking, now would be a good time to do so. (The same applies to Gift Aid, as ever!)

The Members’ Area has also been updated with downloadable PDFs of all three of the above publications — with the file sizes suited to viewing on screen, to make them readily accessible. Please have a look and let us know what you think of them in this format.

Don’t forget that the first of this winter’s trio of “Photograph Appreciation Evenings” will be taking place on Tuesday 13th January (see below). Again, the link you will need to join us will be found in the Members’ Area in good time for the event. On the subject of Members’ Meeting, also a reminder that the Spring Meeting will take place at the Museum of Making at Derby on Saturday 28th March.

We look forward to seeing as many of our Members in person as we can this year; events at Litchurch Lane, the National Railway Museum and many model railway shows, are already arranged (or in the process of), with more to come. Further details will be posted here as well as in the Newsletter.

Finally, this post also happens to coincide with the First Anniversary of this Website going “live”. We have had a lot of very useful feedback about it from Members, which we greatly appreciate. However, if you have comments you’d like to share with us, we would be delighted to hear from you.

You are invited to spend one winter's evening each month of the new year to: view, study, scrutinise, discuss, pick apart, debate, comment upon, critique, speculate over, chat about and - most of all - to simply enjoy... Images from the Midland Railway Society's extensive photograph archive. Second Tuesday of January, February and March -- 13th January, 10th February, 10th March - 19:30 to 21:00(ish). The events will be online only, conducted over "Teams", and will be led by Dave Harris using the resources of the Midland Railway Study Centre. They will be informal, so drop in or leave at any point. The objective will be to cover a wide range of subjects, periods and locations. There will be some "mystery photos" where the location is unknown, but in the main, the idea is for everyone to have the chance to savour some less well known images and discuss what can be seen — especially features that might not be immediately obvious to everyone. EVERY OBSERVATION WILL BE EQUALLY WELCOME! More information about the event and the link to join in can be found closer to the time at midlandrailwaysociety.org.uk/members Login details for the Members' Area are provided in each edition of the Members' Newsletter. Comments, suggestions, requests etc. can be sent to dave@midlandrailwaysociety.org.uk THE BEST ROUTE FO COMFORTABLE TRAVEL (..as can, if required, basic technical support questions for "Teams").
