The Friends of the Nottingham Road Cemetery at Derby are holding an Open Day on Saturday 12 September as part of the Heritage Open Days scheme. We are delighted to support the event with a small presence and will be talking to visitors about the multitude of Midland Railway employees who lie there for eternity.
The event begins at 10:00 and at 10:30 Dave Harris will be leading a walking tour of several such graves, speaking about the life, times and (where we know), ultimate downfall of their incumbents.
Midland Railway Society members may recall that lieu of a Presidential Address at the 2021 AGM (normality being somewhat disrupted that year) a video presentation titled Spirits of the Midland Railway was shown instead. We are very pleased to announce that in connection with this year’s event, a follow up video, imaginatively titled Spirits of the Midland Railway 2026, featuring the graves to be visited on the walking tour, will be released on YouTube to coincide with the Open Day.
To whet your appetite, the 2021 video has been re-published on the Midland Railway Society’s YouTube channel and is available for all to watch (and hopefully enjoy).
Please come along and join us for the tour if you can – admission is free! The tour will last about an hour. There will be a small amount of “off piste” walking to grave sites, so good footwear and a strong sense of watching your step are strongly recommended. Otherwise, it won’t be an arduous trek. We have ordered (more) fine weather for the day.
