The Midland Railway was one of the very largest of the pre-grouping railway companies with a route mileage of 1,521 in England and Wales plus a further 265 miles in Ireland. It connected places as far apart as Carlisle and Bath; Southend and Swansea; London and Londonderry and the many villages, towns and cities in between.

The MRS has amassed a variety of information about the many places and lines that the MR served. These include stations of all sizes, signal boxes, bridges, tunnels, collieries, workshops, locomotive sheds, employee’s dwellings, offices, warehouses, provender stores and five-star hotels.

The MR was based in Derby with its head office, locomotive, carriage and wagon works and a major station. The city is to this day a major centre of the railway industry. Many buildings around the station were built by the MR and their origins are still evident.

We have a wide range of primary research material such as photographs, drawings, letters and other documents, menus, luggage labels and much more.
