The story of the Derby to Chesterfield line of the Midland Railway is told in the usual Middleton Press style, with plenty of good quality black and white photos covering from the late 1890s to the present day, with maps, ticket images, timetables, a line gradient diagram, signal box details and many other items of ephemera. There is also a short chapter on the 2ft gauge Ashover Light Railway which ran between Ashover Butts and Clay Cross and was built using mainly surplus War Office equipment after WWI. In addition to minerals from quarries in Ashover, the line caried passengers from 7th April 1925 with a reduced service from February 1926 and further reductions in August and October 1931. Summer services lingered on until 13th September 1936 but mineral traffic continued until 23rd October 1950.
