Jack Turner joined the LMS in 1947 on the cusp of nationalisation. Although becoming a fireman, his dream of becoming a driver was thwarted by events outside his control but having transferred to become a signalman he rose rapidly through wage and salaried staff grades becoming Chief Operation Inspector for two routes out of London Euston. Along the way he had spells as a relief signalman, a booking office clerk and a relief station master. His book is a wry miscellany of stories about his 46 years’ service on the railways and the changes he witnessed.
