This volume is part of the Midland Main Lines series and in traditional Middleton Press style examines 13 locations on a route weaving between the major centres of Derby and Nottingham and notes how they have changed over the years. Originally part of the Midland Counties Railway and substantially dating from the 1840s, the line became part of the Midland Railway in May 1844 with the Ilkeston Town branch opening to passengers in 1847. The line carried heavy coal and mineral traffic until the decline in coal consumption culminating in the closure of Ratcliffe on Soar power station in 2024. Local passenger services on the Ilkeston branch ceased in 1947 but mainline trains from London St Pancras still operate on part of this route, mainly diverging to either Derby or Nottingham at Trent Junction although the Erewash Valley Line through Toton and its now much-diminished locomotive depot and largely derelict marshalling yards does occasionally carry diverted passenger services.
