The Midland Railway was formed in 1844 by a merger of three companies: the Midland Counties, the North Midland and the Birmingham & Derby Junction and by 1857 had grown from a predominantly local network into a powerful company connecting London with the north by means of an extension southward from Leicester to Hitchen where a connection was made with Great Northern Railway services into Kings Cross.

In addition to train times, details of regular excursions are included, with General Regulations for passenger and parcel traffic, passenger fares, company bye-laws and connecting ship, coach and omnibus services.
