In 1928 the newly renamed Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Traction Company decided to replace their aging trams with trolly buses on both the main Ripley – Nottingham line and the independent and unconnected Ilkeston subsidiary with the first services commencing in 1932, Subsequent extensions linked Ilkeston with the main route at Heanor creating a network of over 22 miles. After WWII, the system was in dire need of upgrading but a combination of factors including nationalisation of the power industry meant that small, independent trolleybus systems such as the Notts & Derbys were hopelessly uneconomic and the system closed in April 1953 to be replaced by conventional buses.
