Ribblehead: The Story of the Great Viaduct on the Settle – Carlisle Line

£18.00

By R. Mitchell, Kingfisher Productions. Hardback, 80 pages of mainly colour photographs and some text.

A mainly photographic account recounting the recent history of this iconic structure. A quarter of a mile long, with 24 arches, it has a slight curve as it spans an area where three valleys meet. Originally referred to as Batty Wife Viaduct after a fanciful local story, it became known as Ribblehead Viaduct and has survived almost 150 years of extreme weather, heavy use, followed by neglect, threat of closure and subsequent restoration. A lasting testimony to its intrepid builders.
