The Midland Division of the LMS&R covered most of the lines of the old Midland Railway. The time tables were divided into sections, with separate series for passenger and freight, and printed as combined volumes covering the whole Division and sectional booklets. The page numbering ran continuously through the sections, so that the tables of this section start at page 250.

Section 5 of the freight time tables covered services in the Nottingham and South Yorkshire coalfields, including Worksop, Shirebrook, Mansfield, Kirkby, Annesley and Radford plus the branch from Mansfield to Rolleston via Southwell.  It had been an area of fierce competition between the railway companies in the pre-grouping era. Many mines were sunk in the early 1900s with new railways planned to serve them, resulting in a number of jointly owned lines resulted, including the South Yorkshire Joint Railway which ran south from Doncaster in which 5 companies had an interest. After Grouping it remained jointly owned by the LMS and LNER.
