Resources

We have a wide range of material available covering every aspect of the MR.

The Midland Railway Study Centre

The Midland Railway Society is a partner with Derby Museums in operating the Midland Railway Study Centre in Derby’s ‘Museum of Making’, located in the city’s historic Silk Mill. The Study Centre houses the largest publicly accessible collection of research material relating to the MR. Visitors are welcome by appointment. We have original documents, maps, drawings, plans and photographs. We have a comprehensive on-line catalogue and a range of ‘Finding Aids’. In addition we have an unrivalled collection of MR objects and ephemera in the Museum.

Even if you cannot make it to Derby for any reason, there is no reason to miss out on the facilities of the MRSC. We are actively digitising as much of the collection as is practical and the Study Centre’s web site is the gateway to a bewildering breadth and quantity of online resources – with some as an exclusive benefit for Midland Railway Society members. Come and have look.

The Journal

The Journal is the Midland Railway Society’s flagship publication providing a stimulating mix of academic level articles and more general material providing an outlet for our Members of all levels of interest to share their knowledge and interests. Edited by Andrew Surry with support from Stephen Lea, who in turn edits Modelling the Midland, the titles combine to inform and inspire  a wide range of Midland-related interests.

Contributions are always welcomed so there is no excuse for not putting finger to keyboard.

The Newsletter

Our members receive four editions of the Newsletter during the course of a year’s subscription. Edited by Howard McLean, the Newsletter contains a lively mix of news about the Society as well as upcoming events. It also serves as a platform for Members to ask questions, exchange information and learn more about the history of the Midland Railway and all that goes with that.

The “MRSoc” Discussion Group

As if all that were not enough, a subscription to the Society also provides access to our Member-led online forum for discussion and timely exchanges of knowledge.

The Study Centre has thousands of photographs.
These can be found by searching the Catalogue and (optionally) select “Photograph” in the Categories drop-down to browse the thumbnails.

Modelling the Midland

Launched in 2023, a magazine devoted to the modelling of all aspects of the MR, its predecessors, successors, and joint lines, in any scale or gauge. It complements the Journal and is available free to Members.
