The Midland Railway Society has been supporting the City of Derby throughout the summer as the council endeavours to increase footfall in the magnificent and recently refurbished Market Hall. Our members may recall that for the 175th anniversary of the formation of the Midland Railway we held our own exhibition at the Midland Hotel. In connection with that event we produced a series of ‘pop-up banners’ which detail some of the history of the Company, broken down into specific activities.

Since “MR175”, these displays have been brought out for Study Centre open days and other events, but otherwise largely remained in store, gathering dust. Consequently we were delighted to help when we were asked if we could do anything to support the Market Hall and the banners are with them on open-ended loan.

Visitors will find our banners spread around the balcony, offering plenty of space and opportunity to stand and take in the detail… or simply glance at them as they take in the glorious building.
If you find yourself in Derby with half an hour to pass, why not go and have a look for yourself. The Market Hall’s opening times are; Tue-Wed 08:00-15:00, Thu-Sat 08:00-22:00 and Sun 10:00-18:00.

You can find out more at the Derby Market Hall website and a little bit about the history of the building on Wikipedia. There are a fine selection of historic photographs of the building and its environs also on display on the balcony.
